Welcome to the Sunset Middle School Band Program!
I will send out this newsletter every Friday to keep you up to date on what we are learning in band class and also so that you know when events like our concerts are coming up. Students should have already brought home their Band Handbooks. Please read through the information carefully and then sign and return the last page by September 1st. You can keep the first page so that you have all of the dates for our required performances handy! We’ve had to shift our plans for starting on our instruments - please make sure students start bringing their instruments on Monday (Aug 28th!). All students should also have a one-inch binder specifically for band. Ms. Cort has a few extra binders if needed! Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions! Email is the best way to reach me: [email protected] Beginning Low Brass Players Check out this opportunity to get even better at your instrument and meet new friends through the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestra! This opportunity is for Trombone, Baritone, and Tuba players. Please email Ms. Cort if you are interested! Intermediate and Advanced Band Families See the message below about the opportunity to join the Longmont Youth Symphony! They have an amazing director and it can be a great way to grow your musical skills outside of class! Auditions are due soon - let me know if I can help you prepare to audition! You are invited to audition to be part of the Longmont Youth Symphony! Upon auditioning for LYS, students are either placed into the developing ensemble (String Orchestra for strings, Symphonic Band for winds) or into the Symphony Orchestra (for more experienced students). The LYS season starts on August 26 and meets most Saturdays of the school year. We take breaks for Labor Day, between Thanksgiving and the New Year, and for Spring Break. String Orchestra and Symphonic Band meet from 9:00am-10:30am and Symphony Orchestra is from 9:00am-noon. The cost for the entire season is $450 for String Orchestra/Symphonic Band and $525 for Symphony Orchestra. That can be paid all upfront or monthly payment plans can be set up. Need based scholarships are also available (application required). Students interested in auditioning should prepare a major scale and a solo etude or peice. If they want to audition but aren't sure what to prepare, please email your school music teacher for ideas. The link to upload audition videos can be found here, and you can also find more information about LYS at https://www.longmontyouthsymphony.org/.
